This paper is a case stud y on the social education programs in the Korean museums. Tbe
goal of this paper is to analyze the Korean museum history, recent condition, and the
characteristics of the social education programs of Korean museums and to present the tasks
of Korean museums compared witb those of the foreign cases
Many archeological findings representing the various shapes of infrastructure of Korean
culture have been excavated, collected and displayed for a long period of time. Therefore
the Korean museums have given Korean people a chance to study their own history by
visiting the museums. The traditional functions of Korean museums has been changed since
the early twenty century. It is a matter of course th at the traditional characteristics of the
museums are still valid, but people nowadays begin to lay an emphasis not only on
‘edutainment(education and entertainment) ’ of museums, but on ‘eduinfotainment(education
and information and entertainment)’ which stresses on education and the exchange of
information.
The beginning of the social education in the Korean museums goes back to early 1953
when the provisional National Museum of Korea took the place of the past National Folk of
Museum, and it opened the children’s museum school. And in October, 1954, Gyeongju-children’s
museum school was established in Gyeongju National Museum. The full- fledged
social education has begun by offering social education programs in the National Museum
of Korea and Gyeoungju National Museum since 1980.
Various social education programs in the museums have continued for last 20years.
Despite their short history, the contents and qualities of education at the museums have
been irnproved markedly. And people has begun to take interests in the social education
programs and take part in them. But mostly the social education programs of domestic
museums have their own limits by simply following in the footsteps of the programs of The
National Museum of Korea. A lack of diversity in the programs does not provide a high
quality of education to general audience. But the outlook of Korean museums is not bad.
Each museum has recently begun to support social education programs. Ministry of Culture
and Tourism and many associations are also now involved in various museum programs.
Many Korean universities have started to offer new museum departments and produced
many talented students who now play very important roles in developing the education
programs.
Modern society takes a increasing interest in culture-related contents and people regard
cultural excellence as a nation al competitive. Modern museums must be the best
representative infrastructure of culture and allow foreigners to know Korean culture. As we
think of our past history, museums are the organization of education and cultural resources
which enable us to overcome the problems of today and to create the hope of tomorrow
Therefore museums are treasure houses of traditional Korean culture. In a nutshell, the
importance of the social education of museums canl10t be overemphasized. (이하 생략)
